Backblaze
Backblaze is a pioneer in robust, scalable low cost cloud backup and storage services. Personal online backup to enterprise scale data storage solutions. Backblaze backs up all your data – no questions asked. No picking files. No digging through folders.

Carbonite
Carbonite is an online backup service, available to Windows and Mac users, that backs up documents, e-mails, music, photos, and settings. Carbonite keeps small businesses and home offices running smoothly. We offer a comprehensive suite of affordable services for data protection, recovery and anytime, anywhere accessibility. From running your small business to running your household, our goal is to provide secure and affordable cloud backup for all your files.

Backblaze and Carbonite are, at first glance, the same sort of thing—like two nearly identical intergalactic hitchhikers who both swear by the same brand of improbably waterproof towel. They sit quietly in the background, backing up your data with all the dedication of a mildly obsessive AI, ensuring that your precious files don’t suddenly take a one-way trip into the abyss of digital oblivion. Both encrypt your files, both retrieve them if lost and both have been around since the late 2000s, which, in internet years, makes them old enough to complain about how things used to be cheaper and less complicated.

Backblaze, founded in 2007, prefers to take the “why make things difficult?” approach, offering unlimited storage at a price that even a galactic hitchhiker running low on space credits might afford. It backs up everything without asking too many questions, like a particularly efficient butler who never judges your excessive collection of cat videos. It also dabbles in B2 Cloud Storage, which is like giving that same butler a spaceship and telling him to start a moving company. Simple, effective and occasionally surprising when you realize it does charge for shipping your files back to you if you want them on a physical drive.

Carbonite, founded a year earlier in 2006 and later scooped up by OpenText (a company based in Canada, a place known for politeness and data privacy laws), has a slightly different attitude. It doesn’t go in for this “unlimited” nonsense unless you’re in a very specific tier and it caters more to businesses who like their backups to sound official and compliance-friendly. It even offers hybrid backup solutions, which is the technological equivalent of keeping both a teleportation device and a really sturdy filing cabinet, just in case. With solid customer support and a tiered pricing model, Carbonite is more like a well-dressed corporate advisor, whereas Backblaze is your slightly scruffy but brilliant tech-savvy friend.
