BigCommerce and Squarespace, at first glance, seem like the kind of friendly, well-meaning entities that might offer you a cup of tea before casually revolutionizing your online presence. Both let you build websites, sell things and generally convince the universe that your products deserve attention. They have templates, payment gateways and marketing tools that claim to make life easier, though whether they actually do or just add another layer of things to tweak endlessly is a question best left to philosophers or possibly web designers.

BigCommerce, born in Australia in 2009 (presumably after someone realized that selling things online could be an infinite game of stacking features), is rather good at making big stores even bigger. It cheerfully integrates with Amazon, eBay and anything else that moves at the speed of capitalism. Its pricing, rather cunningly, increases as your sales grow, a bit like a particularly polite tax system. It also comes with enough B2B tools to make any supply chain enthusiast weep with joy.

Squarespace, on the other hand, has been around since 2003, hailing from the USA, where people have long known that looking good is half the battle. It specializes in making things beautiful, whether you’re selling pottery, showcasing your photography or writing a blog about artisanal cheeses. It charges a straightforward monthly fee, which is nice, because thinking too hard about pricing is exhausting. It also includes built-in scheduling and portfolio tools, because it assumes—probably correctly—that its users would rather be designing lovely things than configuring shipping rates.
