Evernote and Nozbe are both, in their own way, grand attempts at making human beings slightly less terrible at organizing their own lives. They live in the cloud, synchronize themselves across a bewildering array of devices and let people share things with each other in ways that seem almost suspiciously cooperative. Both allow the storage of words, tasks and even bits of the real world (provided you have a camera handy and no moral objection to digitizing reality). In short, they exist to make sure people remember things, though people are still, of course, free to ignore them entirely.

Evernote, a sturdy American invention from the distant technological era of 2008, believes that notes are the key to life, the universe and everything. It allows you to write, store, tag, search and even scan pieces of information, which means you can confidently save a receipt, forget about it and then find it again only after the warranty has expired. It has a noble dedication to long-form content, making it perfect for students, researchers and anyone who likes to pretend they’ll eventually get around to writing that novel.

Nozbe, born a year earlier in Poland, takes a slightly different approach, operating on the deeply suspect assumption that humans can complete tasks if only they organize them properly. It follows the Getting Things Done (GTD) philosophy, which is essentially the belief that if you write enough lists, eventually something might happen. It is designed for teams, businesses and entrepreneurs who enjoy delegating work to others while feeling highly productive themselves. Unlike Evernote, which drowns you in notes, Nozbe drowns you in tasks, ensuring that, one way or another, you’ll always have something to feel guilty about not doing.
