Facebook Messenger and iMessage are both popular messaging platforms for texting, sending photos, group chats, voice and video calling. Both are are available on mobile and desktop and offer end-to-end encryption (iMessage for Apple users, Messenger for certain messages if encrypted).
But Facebook Messenger (available since 2011) is available on Android, iOS and via web browser. It can be used without a phone number (works with Facebook accounts), supports integration with third-party apps and services, allows users to send money via Facebook Pay.
iMessage (2011) works only on Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac) and requires a phone number or Apple ID to send messages. The messages sent between Apple devices are fully encrypted end-to-end.
