ForgeRock and Okta are two very clever, very sophisticated identity management platforms that both claim to be absolutely essential for keeping your digital existence from being hijacked by nefarious entities lurking in the great swirling chaos of the internet. They both let people sign in, sign out and generally prove they are who they claim to be, using an impressive array of cryptographic wizardry and multi-factor authentication hoops to jump through. Enterprises use them, governments trust them and hackers find them mildly annoying, which is generally a good sign.

ForgeRock, which began life in the scenic land of Norway before deciding it preferred the bustling tech scene of America, caters to organizations with intricate, mind-boggling security needs—think sprawling multinational corporations, financial institutions that don’t want their money vanishing mysteriously and governments that like to know who’s using their secret back doors. It offers an AI-driven system that doesn’t just check your password but also ponders whether you seem particularly suspicious today. Open-source roots mean it’s wonderfully customizable, assuming you have the patience to wade through code like an archaeologist digging for long-lost documentation.

Okta, meanwhile, was born in the USA and, much like a well-organized but slightly overenthusiastic office manager, believes in making everything as seamless and cloud-friendly as possible. It's a favorite among tech companies, SaaS businesses and anyone who prefers their identity management to be more “plug-and-play” than “tweak-and-pray.” Unlike ForgeRock, it has no real love for on-premises solutions—if your IT department still clings to dusty old servers in a basement, Okta would probably prefer you just move on. It excels in making authentication quick, easy and (theoretically) painless, provided you can remember which authentication app you were supposed to check five seconds ago.
