Kenexa and Oracle Taleo are both terribly clever bits of software designed to make hiring people less of a chaotic mess. They both exist in the cloud, which is a wonderful way of saying they are somewhere, but no one quite knows where and they do roughly the same thing—help companies find, assess and onboard new employees. They integrate with other serious-sounding HR systems, produce impressively complicated reports and are largely aimed at organizations that need to manage an alarming number of job applications without resorting to throwing darts at résumés.
Kenexa, which first materialized in the USA in 1987 before being scooped up by IBM in 2012, takes a particular interest in figuring out what makes people tick. It has a keen fondness for behavioral assessments, pre-employment tests and the sort of analytics that make managers feel like they have psychic powers. It also dabbles in learning management, because once you've hired someone, you might as well teach them something. Being part of IBM, it has access to Watson, the AI overlord who may or may not be plotting to replace HR departments entirely.
Oracle Taleo, on the other hand, was born in 1999 in Canada, a country known for being exceedingly polite about these things. It was later absorbed by Oracle, which means it now speaks fluent "enterprise" and integrates seamlessly with Oracle’s vast empire of HR tools. It is particularly good at handling the hiring chaos of multinational corporations, automating screening processes to an almost unsettling degree and making sure recruitment workflows move smoothly—assuming, of course, that you’ve configured them correctly and performed the appropriate ritual sacrifices to the gods of enterprise software.
