MindJet MindManager and WriteMapper are both tools designed to help humans organize their thoughts, presumably because thoughts, when left to their own devices, tend to scatter across time and space like a mildly drunk Vogon poet trying to find his way home. They both allow users to drag and drop ideas around in a vaguely intelligent manner, structure them into something that at least resembles coherence and then export the whole mess into something other people might actually understand. This, of course, is an illusion, but a very comforting one.
MindManager has been around since 1994, which in software years is roughly equivalent to the Triassic period. It hails from the United States, the birthplace of both great software and absolutely terrible coffee. Aimed at businesses and professionals who enjoy inflicting Gantt charts and strategic roadmaps on their colleagues, it integrates with things like Microsoft Office, which makes it powerful, expensive and slightly terrifying. It’s the sort of tool that makes you feel like you should be wearing a suit, even if you're working from home in your pajamas.
WriteMapper, on the other hand, is the younger, more artistic sibling that moved to Singapore in 2017 and decided that mind mapping should be about writing things instead of managing people. It keeps things clean and distraction-free, presumably under the belief that words are fragile creatures that will flee at the slightest provocation. It doesn’t do Gantt charts, strategic planning or anything particularly corporate, but it does let writers turn scattered thoughts into structured drafts without the usual existential despair. It’s a one-time purchase, which is both rare and deeply suspicious in an era where software companies prefer to rent out their products like overpriced apartments.
