Skype
Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype alternative for enterprise is called Skype for Business.

Zoiper
Zoiper, the free softphone to make VoIP calls through your PBX or favorite SIP provider. Available for iPhone, Android, WP8, windows, mac and linux.

Skype and Zoiper are two remarkable pieces of technology that allow humans to shout at each other across vast distances without the hassle of physical proximity. They both let you make calls, send messages and encrypt conversations in case an intergalactic spy network is listening. Both work on nearly any device, meaning you can argue with your colleague about spreadsheets on a laptop, tablet or phone while pretending to be somewhere far more interesting.

Skype, a brainchild of Estonia from the distant past of 2003, is the sort of software that insists on knowing everything about you before letting you talk. It thrives on video calls, instant messaging and generally making sure you remain attached to the Microsoft ecosystem like a barnacle on the hull of a particularly determined ship. It doesn’t really do SIP properly, preferring its own secret-sauce protocol, presumably designed by hyper-intelligent beings who never had to configure a business phone system.

Zoiper, also from 2003 but hailing from Bulgaria, takes a much more no-nonsense approach. It assumes you already know what you’re doing and just wants to connect you to your preferred VoIP provider without asking about your life choices. It specializes in voice calls, doesn’t waste time with video conferencing and speaks fluent SIP and IAX, which makes IT admins smile in ways that should probably be studied by anthropologists.
