Wickr
Amazon's Trusted Messenger that enables secure collaboration across messaging, calling, file sharing, and screen sharing.

Telegram and Wickr are both marvelous inventions designed to let humans communicate without the nagging concern that someone, somewhere, might be eavesdropping. They both allow people to send messages, share files and make voice calls, presumably to discuss crucial matters like dinner plans or which cat meme is objectively the best. Each offers self-destructing messages, a feature that sounds thrillingly espionage-like but is mostly used to delete embarrassing typos before anyone notices. Naturally, both have apps on every device known to humankind, ensuring that no one is ever safe from a notification ping.

Telegram, born in 2013 and hailing from Dubai, is the louder, flashier of the two, designed for vast swathes of people to gather in enormous groups and broadcast their opinions to anyone within digital earshot. It offers boundless cloud storage, so users can hoard gifs and conspiracy theories with reckless abandon. Encryption is present but only turned on in specific chats, presumably because Telegram assumes most conversations are not, in fact, worth stealing. It is ideal for those who like their messages quick, their groups massive and their privacy settings optional.

Wickr, on the other hand, emerged a year earlier in the United States and has the air of a grizzled spy who refuses to sit with his back to the door. It encrypts absolutely everything, stores absolutely nothing and deletes messages before they get too comfortable. It is built for businesses, government agencies and anyone who wants to whisper digital secrets into the void without leaving so much as a breadcrumb behind. Wickr takes privacy seriously—possibly too seriously—ensuring that not even the sender can find their own messages after a while.
